Breaking News: China Discovers Another Gigantic Gas Field with Reserves Exceeding 100 Billion Cubic Meters!

On August 21, it is announced from Sinopec’s news office that the Hongxing Shale Gas Field operated by Sinopec Jianghan Oilfield has successfully obtained certification from the Ministry of Natural Resources for its proven shale gas reserves of 165.025 billion cubic meters. This milestone marks the official commissioning of another major shale gas field in China, further demonstrating the significant resource potential of the Hongxing area. The successful development of this new strategic reserve for shale gas plays a positive role in ensuring the nation’s energy security.

Theoretical and Engineering Breakthroughs Unlocked “Energy Codes” of Underground.

Located in Hubei Province and Chongqing Municipality, the Hongxing Shale Gas Field targets the Permian formation at depths of 3,300 to 5,500 meters, characterized by complex structural deformation and significant exploration and development challenges. Sinopec Jianghan Oilfield has continuously advanced key technologies for thin-layer shale gas extraction under complex conditions, innovating shale gas enrichment theories and enhancing geology-engineering integration. By identifying optimal “geological-engineering dual sweet spots” for shale gas enrichment, the project has successfully pioneered China’s first trillion-cubic-meter-scale shale exploration in a new stratigraphic system beyond the Silurian Period.

Additionally, the research team developed innovative technologies for safe horizontal well completion and high-conductivity fracture complexity stimulation, increasing single-well test production from 89,000 cubic meters per day to 323,500 cubic meters per day.

A senior executive of Jianghan Oilfield stated that in the next phase, Sinopec will enhance integrated exploration and development evaluation and deployment, deepen research on key technologies including fundamental geology, development techniques, and engineering processes, continuously expand new zones for shale gas reserve growth in the Wujiaping Formation, and actively foster new bases for large-scale production of Permian shale gas.

Sinopec has been consistently driving the high-quality development of China’s shale gas industry. China’s resource profile is characterized by “abundant coal,  rare oil, and scarce gas,” making it a long-term major importer of oil and gas. In 2020, the first phase of the Weirong Shale Gas Field was completed, becoming China’s first deep shale gas field with proven reserves exceeding 100 billion cubic meters. In 2024, exploratory wells such as Jinye 3 and Ziyang 2 in the Sichuan Basin unlocked new potential for reserve expansion and production growth.

To date, Sinopec has established one trillion-cubic-meter-scale shale gas field (Fuling) and four deep shale gas fields with reserves exceeding 100 billion cubic meters each (Weirong, Qijiang, Yongchuan, and Hongxing), continuously injecting clean energy momentum into high-quality development.

Shale gas desanding refers to the process of removing solid impurities such as sand grains, fracturing sand (proppant), and rock cuttings from shale gas streams (with entrained water) through physical or mechanical methods during shale gas extraction and production.

As shale gas is primarily obtained through hydraulic fracturing technology (fracturing extraction), the returned fluid often contains large amounts of sand grains from the formation and residual solid ceramic particles from fracturing operations. If these solid particles are not completely separated early in the process flow, they would cause severe erosion to pipelines, valves, compressors and other equipment, or lead to pipeline blockages in low-lying sections, clogging of instrument pressure guide pipes, or trigger production safety incidents.
