Important progress has been made in ultra-deep exploration in the Tarim Basin: Well Zhentan-1 obtained Cambrian source-rock cores at 8,080 meters

Recently, PetroChina’s Tarim Oilfield has achieved a series of important results in ultra-deep exploration and development. The Hade–Fuman Oilfield has made a major breakthrough in cumulative oil and gas production from reservoirs deeper than 6,000 meters. At the same time, Well Zhentan-1, located in Wensu County on the northwestern margin of the basin, successfully obtained continuous cores in the 8,080-meter interval, setting a regional record for the acquisition of deep geological data.

The Hade–Fuman Oilfield, located in the Taklamakan Desert, is China’s largest desert ultra-deep oil and gas production base. To date, reservoirs deeper than 6,000 meters in the oilfield have cumulatively produced 20.36 million tonnes of crude oil and 8.15 billion cubic meters of natural gas, with total oil and gas equivalent exceeding 26.86 million tonnes. The oilfield has completed drilling of 485 ultra-deep wells, of which 133 wells have cumulative oil and gas production exceeding 100,000 tonnes each, and 464 wells have individual well production exceeding 10,000 tonnes. The Tarim Basin has proven oil and gas reserves of more than 5 billion tonnes, with more than half of the resources occurring in ultra-deep formations, making it a core area for China’s efforts to increase oil and gas reserves and production.

Exploration highlights are equally prominent. On October 1, Well Zhentan-1 recovered a 6-meter continuous core of Cambrian Yuertusi Formation source rock at a depth of 8,080 meters. This source rock, dating back about 500 million years, was cored for the first time below 8,000 meters on the northwestern margin of the Tarim Basin, providing valuable physical material for evaluating the hydrocarbon generation potential of ultra-deep layers. The well is the second well drilled with China’s first independently developed 12,000-meter drilling rig. On October 2, it reached a depth of 8,345 meters, with the exploration target locked on a large Sinian structural trap, aiming to further verify the deep oil and gas resource potential on the northwestern margin of the basin.

The successful coring of Well Zhentan-1 is another practical test of domestically produced 10,000-meter-class drilling rigs in deep exploration engineering. This equipment has high load-bearing and automated operation capabilities, breaking the long-term dependence on imports for high-end deep-well equipment, supporting China’s march toward the deep Earth and continuously expanding the boundaries of ultra-deep oil and gas exploration.

 Shale-Gas-Desanding

With field-proven performance in major global fields operated by CNOOC, CNPC, Petronas and other operators across Southeast Asia, SAGA desanders are deployed on wellhead and production platforms. They deliver dependable solids removal from gas, well fluids and condensate, and play a critical role in seawater purification, production stream protection and water injection/flooding programs.

SAGA’s wider separation portfolio encompasses membrane systems for natural gas CO₂ removal, deoiling hydrocyclones, high-performance compact flotation units (CFUs), Shale gas desanding, Cyclonic dewatering package with produced water treatment, and multi-chamber hydrocyclones, providing comprehensive solutions for the industry’s toughest challenges.
