Equinor and Orlen have started production at the Eirin field in the Norwegian North Sea

Norwegian company Equinor (with a 58.7% stake) and Poland’s Orlen Upstream Norway (with a 41.3% stake) have recently started natural gas production from the Eirin field in the North Sea. The field is located about 250 kilometers west of Stavanger, in water depths of 120 meters, with estimated recoverable resources of approximately 27.6 million barrels of oil equivalent, primarily natural gas. Eirin was discovered as early as 1978 but was left undeveloped due to poor economics. In 2023, in response to changing energy demand in Europe, the partners reassessed the field and formulated a fast-track development plan.

The Eirin field is being developed by tying back to the existing Gina Krog platform, with natural gas exported to Europe via the Sleipner A hub. The project has a total investment of approximately NOK 4.5 billion (USD 463 million) and will extend the economic life of the Gina Krog platform from 2029 to 2036. The platform was already connected to shore power in 2023, with about 90% of the electricity coming from hydropower and 8% from wind power, resulting in low carbon emissions from field production — approximately 3 kg of CO₂ per barrel of oil equivalent.

Linda Kåda Høiland, Senior Vice President at Equinor, said: “The partners saw an opportunity to contribute to European energy security in difficult times. We set an ambitious plan to be fast, cost-efficient and safe, and we have delivered. Eirin will extend production from the Gina Krog platform by seven years.” She also emphasized that it took only three years from project establishment to production start-up, thanks to efficient decision-making and standardized solutions.

Ireneusz Fąfara, Chairman of the Management Board of Orlen, pointed out: “Natural gas production on the Norwegian Continental Shelf plays a crucial role in enhancing the energy security of Europe and Poland, which makes Orlen’s long‑term presence in Norway strategically important. The start‑up of the Eirin field strengthens our position in the region.” At peak production, Eirin will deliver approximately 270 million cubic metres of natural gas per year to Orlen, corresponding to Orlen’s net recoverable reserves of 1.2 billion cubic metres. Wiesław Prugar, member of the Management Board for Upstream at Orlen, stated that connecting Eirin will increase Gina Krog’s output by 9.7 million barrels of oil equivalent, of which Orlen’s net share is 4 million barrels.

After treatment, the natural gas is transported to the Nybro entry point and then via the Baltic Pipe to Poland. The partners plan to continue exploration in the Gina Krog‑Eirin area to unlock further potential.

Cyclonic well stream crude desander with ceramic liners

The extraction of oil and natural gas cannot be achieved without separation equipment.

Shanghai Shangjiang Petroleum Engineering Equipment Co., Ltd. established in Shanghai in 2016, is a modern technology enterprise integrating R&D, design, production, and service. We are dedicated to developing separation and filtration equipment for the oil, gas, and petrochemical industries. Our high-efficiency product portfolio includes de-oiling/dewatering hydrocyclones, desanders for micron-sized particles, and compact flotation units. We provide complete skid-mounted solutions and also offer third-party equipment retrofitting and after-sales services. Holding multiple proprietary patents and operating under a DNV-GL certified ISO-9001, ISO-14001, and ISO-45001 management system, we deliver optimized process solutions, precise product design, strict adherence to engineering specifications, and ongoing operational support.

Reinjected-Water-Cyclone-Desander

Our high-efficiency cyclone desanders, renowned for their exceptional 98% separation rate, have earned recognition from international energy leaders. Constructed with advanced wear-resistant ceramics, these units achieve 98% removal of particles as fine as 0.5 microns in gas streams. This capability enables the reinjection of produced gas for miscible flooding in low-permeability reservoirs, a key solution for enhancing oil recovery in challenging formations. Alternatively, they can treat produced water, removing 98% of particles larger than 2 microns for direct reinjection, thereby boosting water-flood efficiency while minimizing environmental impact.

High-Efficiency-Ultra-Fine-Particle-Desander

Our new product——The High Efficiency Ultra-Fine Particle Desander is a liquid-solid separation device that utilizes an efficient centrifugal principle to separate suspended impurities—such as solids in produced water, seawater, condensate, fine particles in high-viscosity liquids, and catalyst powder in reactors—from fluids (liquids, gases, or gas-liquid mixtures). It effectively removes solid particles with sizes down to 2 microns (at 98% efficiency) or smaller.
The High Efficiency Ultra-Fine Particle Desander delivers high sand removal efficiency, capable of removing solid particles down to 2 microns. The equipment features a compact footprint, requires no external power or chemical additives, and has a service life of approximately 20 years. It offers online sand discharge capability without the need for production shutdown.
Proven in major global fields operated by CNOOC, CNPC, Petronas, and others across Southeast Asia, SJPEE desanders are deployed on wellhead and production platforms. They provide reliable solids removal from gas, well fluids, and condensate, and are critical for seawater purification, production stream protection, and water injection/flooding programs.
Beyond desanders, SJPEE offers a portfolio of acclaimed separation technologies. Our product line includes membrane systems for natural gas CO₂ removaldeoiling hydrocycloneshigh-performance compact flotation units (CFUs)shale gas desandingCyclonic dewater package with produced water treatment,and multi-chamber hydrocyclones, delivering comprehensive solutions for the industry’s toughest challenges.
