Cumulative production at the world’s lowest-altitude ultra-deep extra-heavy oilfield exceeds 10 million tonnes

On June 29, it was learned from CNPC that the cumulative oil production at the Lukqun Oilfield – the world’s lowest‑altitude ultra‑deep extra‑heavy oil field, located at the foot of the Flaming Mountains in Turpan, Xinjiang – has exceeded 10 million tonnes.

Ultra‑deep extra‑heavy oil refers to petroleum resources that are buried several kilometres underground, have a viscosity hundreds of times higher than that of conventional crude oil, and are almost immobile like black mud at room temperature, making them extremely difficult to extract.

The heavy oil reservoirs of the Lukqun Oilfield, located in the hinterland of the Turpan Basin and at the southern foothills of the Flaming Mountains, are generally buried at depths exceeding 2,300 metres, with the deepest reaching up to 5,200 metres. This field is not only the world’s lowest‑altitude ultra‑deep extra‑heavy oil development block, but also the deepest heavy oil reservoir that has been put into large‑scale commercial development in China.

Wang Sheng, from the Reservoir Geology Research Department of the Lukqun Production Management Area, Tuha Oilfield, CNPC, said: “The crude oil here features high density, high viscosity, and high pour point, making it a globally recognised world-class challenge in oil and gas development.”

Because the heavy oil in the Lukqun Oilfield is buried too deep, significant heat loss occurs during long-distance wellbore transportation, rendering conventional thermal recovery techniques completely inapplicable. In the early stage of development, the oilfield faced the dilemma of “having no mature experience to draw on and no supporting technology to adopt.”

Zou Chenglin, head of the Lukqun Production Management Area of Tuha Oilfield, CNPC, said: “By innovatively adding light oil into the wellbore, we have enabled the heavy oil – which previously ‘could hardly flow and could not be pumped’ – to be smoothly lifted to the surface from formations as deep as 3,000 metres. The oilfield’s recovery rate has increased by 11 percentage points compared with the early development stage, achieving large‑scale and cost‑effective production of otherwise difficult‑to‑recover reserves.”

Thanks to these technological breakthroughs, the annual output of the Lukqun Oilfield jumped from 30,000 tonnes to a peak of 800,000 tonnes, and has maintained a stable production of over 400,000 tonnes for 10 consecutive years.

Multi-chamber-hydrocyclone

The extraction of oil and natural gas cannot be achieved without separation equipment.

Shanghai Shangjiang Petroleum Engineering Equipment Co., Ltd. established in Shanghai in 2016, is a modern technology enterprise integrating R&D, design, production, and service. We are dedicated to developing separation and filtration equipment for the oil, gas, and petrochemical industries. Our high-efficiency product portfolio includes de-oiling/dewatering hydrocyclones, desanders for micron-sized particles, and compact flotation units. We provide complete skid-mounted solutions and also offer third-party equipment retrofitting and after-sales services. Holding multiple proprietary patents and operating under a DNV-GL certified ISO-9001, ISO-14001, and ISO-45001 management system, we deliver optimized process solutions, precise product design, strict adherence to engineering specifications, and ongoing operational support.

Reinjected-Water-Cyclone--Desander

Our high-efficiency cyclone desanders, renowned for their exceptional 98% separation rate, have earned recognition from international energy leaders. Constructed with advanced wear-resistant ceramics, these units achieve 98% removal of particles as fine as 0.5 microns in gas streams. This capability enables the reinjection of produced gas for miscible flooding in low-permeability reservoirs, a key solution for enhancing oil recovery in challenging formations. Alternatively, they can treat produced water, removing 98% of particles larger than 2 microns for direct reinjection, thereby boosting water-flood efficiency while minimizing environmental impact.

High-Efficiency-Ultra-Fine-Particle-Desander

Our new product——The High Efficiency Ultra-Fine Particle Desander is a liquid-solid separation device that utilizes an efficient centrifugal principle to separate suspended impurities—such as solids in produced water, seawater, condensate, fine particles in high-viscosity liquids, and catalyst powder in reactors—from fluids (liquids, gases, or gas-liquid mixtures). It effectively removes solid particles with sizes down to 2 microns (at 98% efficiency) or smaller.
The High Efficiency Ultra-Fine Particle Desander delivers high sand removal efficiency, capable of removing solid particles down to 2 microns. The equipment features a compact footprint, requires no external power or chemical additives, and has a service life of approximately 20 years. It offers online sand discharge capability without the need for production shutdown.
Proven in major global fields operated by CNOOC, CNPC, Petronas, and others across Southeast Asia, SJPEE desanders are deployed on wellhead and production platforms. They provide reliable solids removal from gas, well fluids, and condensate, and are critical for seawater purification, production stream protection, and water injection/flooding programs.
Beyond desanders, SJPEE offers a portfolio of acclaimed separation technologies. Our product line includes membrane systems for natural gas CO₂ removal, deoiling hydrocyclones, high-performance compact flotation units (CFUs), shale gas desandingCyclonic dewater package with produced water treatment, and multi-chamber hydrocyclones, delivering comprehensive solutions for the industry’s toughest challenges.
